Made from 100% Syrah, the 2016 Côtes du Roussillon Villages Lesquerde Rectificando Invenies is another Northern Rhône look-alike that delivers everything you could want from the variety. Blackberries, chocolate, scorched earth, graphite, and peppery herbs all flow to a rich, full-bodied, yet also weightless wine that has both richness and elegance. This is the real deal and just a gorgeous, seamless red that needs to be tasted to be believed. Drink it any time over the coming 10-15 years.

Produced from Syrah grown on decomposed granite (sound familiar to fans of Chapoutier's Hermitage?), the 2016 Cotes du Roussillon Villages Lesquerde Rectificando Invenies bursts with pepper-dusted blueberries and crushed stone. It's full-bodied—touching 15% alcohol—and concentrated, yet it shows uncommon elegance and supple tannins, with a long finish that shows just a hint of warmth.
Barrel sample. I love granite, says Michel Chapoutier. Vines are lazy on limestone. Granite, unlike schist, is rare. Boars, not hail, reduced the yield here. Mainly Grenache . Heady, rich, thick. Doesn’t quite follow through to a persistent finish – though tricky to follow the three Ermitages in a tasting line-up. (JR)
