This auctioned bottling delivers quince and pear preserves shot through with fresh lime for a penetrating, bright impression both on the nose and on a surprisingly creamy palate. Faint hints of truffle and yeasty white bread point to the presence of botrytis, although this is another of Thomas Haag’s “nobly” sweet 2015s much more prominently marked by desiccation of healthy fruit due to dry, breezy conditions. It penetrates with rapier rectitude, focus and energy, but also with greater refinement than the corresponding gold capsule Auslese. My salivary glands were left wrung out and my tongue tingling. There were fewer than a hundred liters of this elixir.

Picked with almost no botrytis at all, the 2015 (Brauneberger) Juffer Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese –Goldkapsel– (AP 15) displays a super ripe, intense and warm Riesling, ripe lemon bouquet with a clear and delicate flinty flavor. Concentrated, fine and highly elegant on the palate, this is a very sweet and lush Auslese with a very delicate salinity and a lingering piquancy in the finish. Very precise and balanced, almost enjoyable, but surely it will be even finer in ten and many more years.
