Punteggio 17.5/20 · Da bere 2019-2025, Tim Jackson MW, jancisrobinson.com, Apr 2019

TA 4.57 g/l, pH 3.48, RS 152 g/l. Pale amber tawny, with some olive tones at the rim. Fudge, vanilla and some Bourbon-like tones, with dark chocolate and spice. Intense, spicy, mahogany, old tobacco and dark chocolate. Real depth and intensity, with plenty of sweetness but it is covered by the power and intensity. Long, spicy, nutty finish. (TJ)

The NV Tawny Porto 40 Years S. Leonardo is a field blend coming in with 152 grams per liter of residual sugar. It was bottled in 2016 with a bar-top cork. All mahogany and molasses, this still often seems even fresher than the lovely 30 this issue—but not quite as lively. On the other hand, it is even more concentrated, more unctuous. The flavor is simply packed into the wine. It is so rich, it seems almost creamy. Then, it adds more pure power. The structure is superb, and this finishes with a pop and a bang. Needless to say, the delicious and complex flavors linger indefinitely on the finish. This isn't cheap, but it is very fine. You'll be pretty happy.

Color is almost gone, as this Port shows primarily brown tones in the glass. Think of luxurious, dark, polished wood and you’re probably in the right ballpark. A bit of mahogany does hint at some color. Leather, faint pipe tobacco, and faint varnished wood on the nose give it an aged feel. The palate is expansive, powerful, and mellow all at the same time. Creamy, very full texture. Beautifully integrated sugars and acidity. Meyer lemon, candied blood orange, toasted brown sugar, deep toffee, bourbon vanilla, and candied dried apricots all show at various times while you’re sipping. The finish isn’t as long as some of the others, but still what I would consider to be long. The mouthfeel is simply luxurious.
