Punteggio 16.5/20 · Da bere 2019-2023, Tim Jackson MW, jancisrobinson.com, Apr 2019

Mid amber tawny. Mellow, broad range of subtle vanilla fudge, cinnamon and dried-strawberry flavours – again distinctive like their 10 Year Old, but with more subtlety. Vanilla and dried banana, with cinnamon, caramel and dark chocolate. Just some spirit attack on the mid palate that detracts slightly. (TJ)

The NV Tawny Porto 20 Years S. Leonardo is a field blend coming in with 126 grams per liter of residual sugar. It was bottled in 2017 with a bar-top cork. This has a lot of the liveliness that I look for in a 20—it seems full of life compared to the producer's 10, which is very big but a little stolid. Of course, with a 20 you want to see more concentration and complexity. That's a done deal. The mid-palate is elegant, but you can taste the difference in the intensity of fruit. Plus, this has more character and more power than the 10. It takes the spice and sugar of the 10, then adds some caramel and a touch of brandy. Overall, this is more complex than most 20s as well, seeming more mature and more serious. It is pretty delicious and long on the finish. This is the sweet spot in the lineup—the right intersection of quality and price.

Medium-dark brown. Brown sugar, orange peel, vanilla, and faint caramel on the nose. Darkly sweet entry backed by acidity, then some cherry and brown sugar. Faint cloves and possibly cinnamon in the late palate carrying over into the finish. A new standard in the 20 Year Old category for me.
