Punteggio 16/20 · Da bere 2019-2023, Tim Jackson MW, jancisrobinson.com, Apr 2019

TA 4.34 g/l, pH 3.37, RS 126 g/l. Mid-deep tawny-amber. Marked banana and vanilla character, reminiscent of American oak (though apparently there is none), with cinnamon and dried, wild strawberry beneath. More banana and vanilla character on the palate, with rich, sweet, dried-strawberry fruit and a medium-long, chocolate-coated finish. (TJ)

The NV Tawny Porto 10 Years S. Leonardo is a field blend coming in at 126 grams per liter of residual sugar. It was bottled in 2017 with a bar-top cork. This is a 10 that is impressive for its concentration and power. A bit too stolid at times and just a little flabby, it focuses more on richness than elegance, more on complexity than brightness. It doesn't quite have the lift and precision that some do. However, its solidity and power for this level mostly make up for that. In some ways, it is a step up over a typical 10. Then, there is a beautifully long finish filled with sugar and spice. Overall, it's very well done. It showed better the next day than when first opened, and it showed better as it warmed to about 62 degrees Fahrenheit.

Appears more tawny in the glass than is usual for a 10-yr old – the red is starting toward the orange side of things and the purple is long gone – but it is still a medium to medium dark tawny color with red highlights. The nose is mellow and smooth showing hints of strawberry, cherry, and soft red raspberry, but with a solid tart apricot foundation. Big and full in the mouth. Very unctuous and mouth-coating. Blood orange, apricot, spice. Great acidity. Nice, long finish.
