The 2015 Riesling In der Wand is a jaw-dropping good white that’s from 25-year-old vines planted in rocky, gneiss soils. It has terrific purity in its exotic floral, lychee, green citrus and mineral-laced aromas and flavors. These carry to a layered, concentrated wine that has vibrant acidity as well as a terrific depth of fruit. It’s another winner from importer Peter Weygandt to drink over the coming decade or more.

Apple and white peach are accented with lime and orange zest, hazelnut and crushed stone. Glossy in feel but generously juicy and invigoratingly piquant, this finishes with formidable if slightly austere persistence. While Krutzler bottled the corresponding Pfaffenberg in March, he wisely elected to let this In der Wand stay on its lees until May so as to assuage its phenolic intensity. It will be interesting to witness how it evolves.
The 2015 Riesling In der Wand opens with an intense, fresh, precise and mineral nose of white peaches and crushed stones. Medium to full-bodied, this is a dense, elegant, complex, piquant and aromatic Riesling with a mealy/creamy texture, seductive fruit and lingering minerality. Great grip and tension in the finish. Very young and aromatic. This wine needs another three to five years to unfold its immense potential.
