Punteggio 92/100 · Da bere 2019-2025, Josh Raynolds, Feb 2017

(one-third new oak) Bright straw-yellow. Powerful scents of nectarine, pear skin and Meyer lemon; floral, honey and smoky mineral nuances emerge as the wine opens up. Broad and fleshy but lively on the plate, offering intense, mineral-tinged orchard and pit fruit flavors and a refreshingly bitter suggestion of quinine. Minerally and nervy on the penetrating, seamless, strikingly persistent finish, which leaves behind sappy honeysuckle, iodine and pear skin notes.

Looking first at the whites and a smokin’ good effort from this appellation is the 2015 St Péray Vieilles Vignes, which is the finest vintage for this cuvée to date. Made from a blend of Marsanne and Roussanne that was brought up in barrel, its light gold color is followed by a Grand Cru Burgundy-like bouquet of crisp peach, crushed rocks, orange marmalade, white flowers and spice. Elegant, yet rich and layered, with a great finish, drink this classy beauty over the coming 3-5 years.

50% Marsanne (50-100 years old), 50% Roussanne (over 40 years old). New and one-year-old barrels. Deep straw. Really tangy on the nose – great vivacity and raciness but with a honeysuckle undertow (from the Marsanne presumably) and just a hint of struck match. Utterly satisfying already. Depth and refreshment. I’m not surprised it is already sold out chez Corney & Barrow. Too rich to sip without food though. GV (JR)
