Note di degustazione
TA 13.5 g/l, RS 469 g/l. 2,906 bottles. Moving to deep copper. Savoury and characterful on the nose, with notes of dried mushroom, marmalade and spice box. There is a fennel top note that carries to the palate. This is fleet-footed and more vinous, lively with acidity and tangibly less sweet than the others in this line-up. The lower concentration and weight on the palate make it feel less like an Eszencia, but that does not stop it being delicious, finishing with dried and baked apricots, old wood and black pepper. From spoon, the difference in texture is all the more noticeable; it lacks the hedonism of the other wines. (TP)

The 2008 Tokaji Essencia, a vintage that I have not previously tasted, contains 469 g/l residual sugar with 13.5 g/l acidity. This has higher alcohol, 4.2%, since the berries fermented a little more compared to other years for some unknown reason. Perhaps in direct juxtaposition against other vintages, the 2008 does not quite deliver the same degree of complexity on the nose as it reveals dried honey, elderflower, beeswax and a touch of caramelized pear. The palate is still exquisitely balanced with a keen line of acidity, though it does not have the same bandwidth and tension as other vintages. The 2008 is delicious but not at the same ethereal level. Production totaled 2,906 bottles.
The latest release, the 2008 Tokaji Essencia from the Royal Tokaji Wine Company, was tasted over a period of three days. It is clearly cut from a different cloth to the 2007, disproving the idea that wines of such extraordinary sweetness conform to type. It is lighter on the nose than the 2007, with freshly cut tangerines, apricot and orange zest. There is a brightness here, a sense of energy. The palate is founded upon energy and tension, a silver thread of acidity that cuts through the layer upon layer of orange zest, Japanese yuzu, tangerine and honey. This is an elegant and you might argue, more "reserved" Essencia compared to the 2007. The alcohol is slightly higher at a "whopping" 4%, a relatively easier Essencia to consume compared to the unctuous previous vintage. While it might not achieve the concentration of the 2007, the 2008 Essencia remains an otherworldly feat of nature. I actually shared the remaining bottle with winemakers from Argentina and Portugal in Hong Kong and they became wide-eyed with amazement. That's the magic of Essencia. It might constitute blasphemy, but the freshness means you can enjoy this now, or as my drinking window suggests, wait another 100 years, as temporally fantastical as that sounds. Tasted November 2016.
