Most years the Schonfels may just nudge the Kupp for prime position, but in 2015 they are more or less on a par. Sometimes too much sun can be a problem, and a winemaker like Florian Lauer may prefer to avoid exuberant excess to retain finesse and vibrancy. If so, he has managed this perfectly with the Schonfels, which, despite its notions of tropical fruit, does not fall into the trap of too much residual sugar.
