The 2008 Yacochuya feels much fresher and less ripe than the 2007. It is produced from old, ungrafted Malbec grown at 2,035 meters altitude in Cafayate, in the province of Salta. The fruit is wild, and there are some lactic aromas intermixed with notes of red and black berries, and an earthy, truffle-like aroma, a whiff volatile perhaps. The palate is full-bodied, with volume and density, a powerful wine that does not really show its real size, which means it is quite balanced. An impressive ripe, big, wild Malbec. 25,000 bottles produced.

An impressive ripe, big, wild Malbec. 25,000 bottles produced. Drink 2015-2020. I tasted this collection with David Lesage, general manager of The Rolland Collection, and son-in-law of Dany Rolland. The company is run by different members of the Rolland family. He told me the story about how Michel Rolland received a phone call in Spanish about 25 years ago and he didn’t speak any Spanish at the time. The guy at the other side of the line was Arnaldo Etchart who had vines there, outside Cafayate. The Rollands went to Cafayate, fell in love with the place and discovered Argentina. The 2008 San Pedro de Yacochuya, composed of 85% Malbec and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, and is aged for 12 months in 30% new French oak. Purple in color, it offers up an inviting nose of smoke, tar, licorice, soy, black cherry, and black currant. This leads to a full-bodied wine with layers of succulent fruit, excellent depth and concentration, and a lengthy, pure finish.
