FINE+RARE, Jul 2016

We are huge fans of Olivier Merlin’s wines – but our favourite by far is his Moulin a Vent ‘La Rochelle’. In the last truly outstanding vintage for Beaujolais (2009) Allen Meadows simply stated “This is one very, very serious Bojo with flat out superb length. Buy it”. We took his advice and sold every parcel we could get our hands on. 2015 is the best vintage since 2009 for Beaujolais – indeed based on our recent tastings it’s quite possibly better – and is being heralded as the best vintage for Burgundy as a whole since 2005. For the value this wine offers I recommend buying as much as you can store, especially as I do not expect the word ‘value’ to feature heavily in many 2015 Burgundy offers to come! Made from incredible 77 year old vines in one of the region’s most celebrated vineyards, Merlin’s ‘La Rochelle’ is a concentrated and intensely flavoured style of Beaujolais which drinks beautifully young but also has superb ageing potential. As yet unscored, given the pedigree of the 2015 vintage, the quotes from the critics below and the following this wine has, it will be sold out long before the critics publish their notes.

Brilliant ruby. Highly expressive, mineral-accented aromas of fresh red and blue fruits and floral pastilles, joined in the glass by subtle star anise and incense nuances. Sappy, penetrating and appealingly sweet, offering concentrated raspberry, boysenberry and candied violet flavors that deepen and stretch out with air while showing unlikely delicacy. Shows outstanding delineation and minerally cut on the subtly tannic finish, which hangs on with impressive tenacity.

The 2015 Moulin A Vent la Rochelle is a little dark and broody at first but soon opens up with black cherry, black currants and blueberry. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannin, quite masculine and structured, with good grip on the finish that clearly needs three or four years in bottle to mellow. This is for serious Moulin A Vent lovers only (but hey, who isn't these days?)
