This bottling from the Oberhäuser Leistenberg and Kieselberg leads with scents of apple, Bosc pear and dark berries in fresh as well as high-toned distilled form, accompanied by cooling, aromatically penetrating green herbal essences. The fruit backs off slightly on a firm, full palate with herbal and stony notes taking precedence. The abundantly juicy finish is exemplary in its clarity and its balance of fruit and mineral elements, with alkaline notes, together with piquancy of huckleberry and pear pip serving for invigoration but not pushing it into the arms of austerity. (Dönnhoff calls it “strict” – meaning that as a compliment – but I’m not sure I would go that far.)

The 2015 Riesling Trocken Tonschiefer is from the Oberhausen Leistenberg, from a weathered carbonic slate soil that is able to take water. The wine opens with a lovely, clear and subtle bouquet of white fruits and weathered slate plates. On the palate, this is a light, salty, very well gripped and tension-filled Riesling with clear, dry fruit and dancing slate grains. This is another beauty of the 2015 vintage, and as a Riesling enthusiast you ask yourself: What else do I need?
