Full bottle all of 1,533 g. Tut, tut! Back label has small, dark gold type on black – very difficult to read – but it is 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Malbec, 6% Carmenère and 5% Petit Verdot, apparently. Looks nicely mature. Dark, shaded brick red. Transparent, refreshing fruit. No heaviness, no sweetness, no oak. Just a very pure terroir expression. Appetising, long and well balanced and more lifted than many a red bordeaux. Tannins are well evolved so maybe it won't last as long as a classed-growth bordeaux but it's a real pleasure to drink with none of the 'milk chocolate plus green' aromas that can dog some Chilean reds. Tastes a bit like a Napa Cab from the 1970s! Nice finish. Classy and delicious. (JR)

The 2013 Don Maximiano Founder's Reserve, sourced from a cool vintage, is a blend of 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Malbec, 6% Carménère and 5% Petit Verdot; it fermented in small stainless steel vats and matured in French oak barrels (65% new) for 22 moths. It has a very classical nose, a Bordeaux blend with aromas of blackberries, faint balsamic notes, cedar wood, graphite, cigar box, cracked peppercorns and tobacco leaves. It has a lot less new oak than the vintages of yesteryear. The palate is medium to full-bodied with the telltale Cabernet tannins, juicy fruit, and tension keeping the freshness balancing the sweet fruit. One of the finest versions of Don Maximiano. 73,800 bottled in March 2015.
The 2013 Don Maximiano Founder's Reserve blends 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Malbec, 6% Carménère and 5% Petit Verdot. It reveals aromas of dried fig and jam notes with a balsamic touch. This is juicy, with good freshness for its age. The palate is enveloping and fully evolved. It appears slightly more developed than expected.
