2014 Tolpuddle Pinot Noir

The 2014 Pinot Noir is a distinct wine. The nose and palate are perfectly aligned with oxalis, jasmine tea, pepper-rolled pastrami, saffron, sandalwood and arnica. Mountain herbs lead the charge here; the cool season and the bunch-to-fruit ratio make for a very precise flavor. I have the feeling this will live a very long time; the bunches seem to be protecting the fruit somehow.

50% whole-bunch fermentation, same as usual but it sticks out because this was a combination of cool year and low yield, which meant that that the ratio of berry to stem was lower than usual. Two barrels were dropped in transit, so an even smaller production. Light nose but very fine texture and balance. Really elegant with a mineral note on the end. Lovely well-balanced freshness. I like this character even if the whole-bunch is dominant. (JR)

Brilliant red. Spice- and mineral-accented raspberry and potpourri aromas, along with a deeper cola note. Silky, sweet and penetrating, offering sappy red fruit liqueur and floral pastille flavors braced by a refreshingly bitter blood orange quality. The floral and spice notes drive a very long, incisive and seamless finish that features silky, harmonious tannins and a hint of five-spice powder.
