Due to Flurbereinigung from younger vines planted on grey slate in 1988 and 1989, the 2014 Riesling GG Marienburg shows a very clear, pure and elegant nose with stewed apple and lemon aromas long with some dusty stone aromas. Round and elegant on the palate, this is a pure and full-bodied wine with moderate 12.5% alcohol and a remarkable finesse. Picked in early October, this is a dry Riesling classic: straight and frisky with clear and stimulating fruit.

Fresh lime and apple are mingled with seawater on an animating yet faintly creamy and palpably extract-rich palate; the buffering influence of lees and malolactic conversion results in a nice balance between richness and refreshment. Bitterness of fruit seeds is also largely well-buffered. The finish displays admirable clarity given lees influence and malo; a surprising sense of lift for a wine of nearly 13 percent alcohol; and an appealing alliance of vibrancy with mouthwatering marine minerality.
Gentle citrus fruit, bright acid, but rather restrained and even a little dilute by Grosses Gewächs standards. (RH)
