(vinified with 90% whole clusters; the yield here was just under 20 hectoliters per hectare): Medium ruby. Wild, soil-inflected aromas of black- and redcurrant, black cherry, pepper, animal fur and underbrush, complicated by a suggestion of iron. Plush and sweet but vibrant and dynamic too, showing outstanding cut and lift to the slightly sauvage dark fruit and licorice flavors. Finishes with a distinctive cool, peppery quality and terrific verve and length. The serious tannins spread out to coat the incisors and palate without leaving any impression of dryness. This powerful wine should be very long-lived.

(from 65-year-old vines; production for the grand crus was generally around 20 hectoliters per hectare in 2013, according to Dugat; 100% vendange entier ): Very dark red. Reticent but bright nose hints at licorice, violet, faded rose and bitter chocolate. Densely packed but very tight, with intense blueberry and bitter chocolate flavors accented by a cool menthol quality. The serious, firm-edged tannins will need a good decade to unwind.

The 2013 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru includes 90% whole-bunch fruit. It has greater perfume on the nose compared to the Mazoyeres, more floral and seductive with great purity. The palate is opulent and velvety with ripe and succulent tannins, layers of cassis and blackcurrant fruit with a svelte, lush finish. This is very fine, although I perceive more tension on the Mazoyères at the moment.

100% whole bunch. 100% new oak. 70-year-old vines. Very ripe purple fruits and great seduction. So rich. Great intensity. Massive attack and weight on the palate with the fruit only just disguising the massive tannic charge. Admirable intensity. For the very long term. Excellent life and vibrancy on the end however.
