Punteggio 93/100 · Da bere 2020-2028, Josh Raynolds, Mar 2016

Inky ruby. Heady, spice-tinged aromas of cassis and blueberry preserves gain complexity from violet and cracked pepper nuances. Dark berry liqueur and spicecake flavors show excellent depth as well as vivacity thanks to a spine of zesty minerality. Finishes with very persistent black and blue fruit qualities, smooth tannins and strong floral persistence. This sexy wine should be approachable on the young side but will also age well on its balance.

An elegant, seamless effort that borders on being mid-weight, the 2013 Cote Rotie Domaine des Pierrelles offers the textbook aromatics of raspberries, spring flowers, singed herbs and spice that are the hallmark of these steep granite/schist slopes located just outside of Ampuis. Coming from a tiny parcel of mica-schist soils located in the southern/Cote Blonde side of the appellation, it's medium-bodied, moderately concentrated, with ultra-fine tannin and an overriding pretty feel, it should drink nicely for 10-12 years.

Opaque ruby. Vibrant cherry and blueberry aromas are complemented by zesty minerality and suave floral and incense qualities. Lively dark fruit flavors are gently sweet and focused, with hints of olive paste and licorice adding depth. Silky and broad on the long, penetrating finish, which features fine-grained tannins and lingering spice and mineral qualities. This sexy wine should be very appealing on release but it definitely has the stuffing to age.

The 2013 Côte Rôtie Domaine des Pierrelles is impressive, and possibly a match for the 2012. Possessing a classic Côte Rôtie perfume of rose petal, mint, exotic flowers, lots of minerality and sweet black raspberry, it’s medium+-bodied, crisp and focused on the palate, with an overall elegant feel. It’s not a blockbuster, and has a pretty, lively feel that will drink nicely for another decade.||The revamped Jaboulet firm, under the leadership of Caroline Frey, seems to have settled in and are now producing one serious lineup of wines from throughout the Rhone Valley. eRobertParker.com.December, 2014
