Punteggio 92/100 · Da bere 2021-2027, Josh Raynolds, Feb 2017

Opaque ruby. Vibrant, mineral-tinged dark berry and fruitcake aromas are complemented by suggestions of cola, licorice and black olive. Sappy, penetrating and appealingly sweet, offering an array of black and blue fruit flavors that are given focus and lift by a core of juicy acidity. Rich yet energetic, showing excellent delineation and nerve on the impressively long, smoke-tinged finish.

The two flagship releases from St Joseph include the Le Clos and Les Granits. Almost as good as the Le Clos, the 2014 St Joseph Les Granits offers a complex bouquet of ripe red and black fruits, new saddle leather, beef blood and toasted spice in a medium to full-bodied, nicely concentrated style. It has more obvious structure than the Le Clos and needs 3-4 years of bottle age, which isn’t the norm in the vintage.

Bright violet. Explosive, mineral-tinged aromas of blackberry, incense, potpourri, olive and woodsmoke, lent vivacity by a peppery topnote. Shows excellent clarity and thrust on the palate, offering sweet, smoke-tinged black and blue flavors and a strong suggestion of candied violet. The juicy, expansive finish displays velvety tannins and a strong echo of candied flowers.

Cask sample. Granite and faces south from the lieu-dit that is actually called St-Joseph. Blackish crimson. Sumptuous ripe nose and perhaps the merest hint of reduction on the nose. Real grip here. Food desperately needed! (JR)
