Just a super wine, with a blast of ripe, peppery kirsch, smoke flowers and spice. Supple and bright on the palate, the finish is juicy, fresh and invigorating. You can drink this now, if you like primary wines with zip, or give it a few more years in the cellar for additional softness and nuance.

(aged in 60% new oak): Glass-staining ruby. Powerful, mineral-accented aromas of dark fruit liqueur, vanilla, incense and candied violet carry a spicy topnote. Juicy black and blue fruit and floral pastille flavors become sweeter and deeper with air. Rich and seamless in texture, with very good finishing clarity, well-knit tannins and lingering floral and fruitcake notes.
Even better (than the La Barbarine), the 2012 Côte Rôtie La Serene Noire has a slightly darker slant to its fruit, with perfumed rose petal, sweet spice, dried violets and raspberry and black raspberry fruit. One of the most voluptuous and sexy wines in the vintage, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, no hard edges and a seamless, silky texture that keeps you coming back to the glass. Count me a fan and this beauty will thrill over the coming 10-15 years.
