Bright violet color. Vibrant, mineral-laced aromas of red fruit preserves, candied flowers and spicecake, along with a hint of licorice. Palate-staining, concentrated raspberry liqueur, cherry and peppery spice flavors show excellent clarity and power. The floral quality dominates the finish, which hangs on with superb tenacity and only a hint of fine-grained tannins. I find this expressive wine quite approachable but it also has the depth and balance to reward patience.

Bottled in June of this year, the 2012 Côte Rôtie Blonde de Seigneur comes from the lighter soils of the southern part of the appellation and was completely destemmed and vinified all in stainless steel. Incorporating 3-5% Viognier and aged 18 months in 30% new barrels, it exhibits a complex, refined style to go with pretty rose petal, red raspberry and spice-driven aromas and flavors. Medium-bodied, seamless and elegant, with a forward, feminine style, drink it over the coming decade.

5% Viognier, 25% new oak for 18 months. More structure and fruit power than their St-Joseph, but the same staunchly savoury finish – incredibly gastronomic and incredibly complex with floral notes and a sort of charcoal quality. Very piquant spice too. Light but tightly packed density and great length. (RH)
