Saturated ruby. Smoky, spice-accented aromas of blueberry and cherry pit, with a bright mineral overtone. Sweet and expansive on the palate, offering an array of dark fruit and floral flavors complicated by Indian spice and smoked meat nuances. This rich yet lively wine finishes with emphatic thrust, supple tannins and a late kick of zesty minerality.

From the schist soils around Vienne and a southwest-facing slope, the 2012 Syrah l’Ame Soeur is a drop-dead gorgeous effort that represents a smoking value. Showing both richness and elegance, it gives up lots of sweet cherry fruit, dried spice, and floral notes to go with a medium to full-bodied texture, fine tannin and stunning purity of fruit. Drink it anytime over the coming decade. There are some high-quality wines coming from this resurrected region, particularly from these top producers in Côte Rôtie and Saint Joseph.
(100% syrah): Opaque ruby. Spicy red fruits, potpourri and a suggestion of star anise on the highly perfumed nose. Silky and appealingly sweet, with impressive energy to its raspberry preserve, floral pastille and spicecake flavors. Finishes juicy and long, with lingering florality and smooth, harmonious tannins. Ogier is increasing the use of whole clusters for this wine: 20% this vintage and 33% in 2013.
