Tasted first in components: #1, from Beute du Mont, which is just above Maison Rouge in Tupin: Fresh red fruit and floral aromas and flavors show good energy and pick up a spicy quality with aeration. Bright and sharply focused, finishing with good clarity and cut. #2, from Fontgeant: Riper, spicier and darker in character, with a hint of white pepper adding bite. Becomes more floral with air and finishes with lingering sweetness and impressive cling. #3, from Bertholon, a new vineyard for Ogier that abuts Grandes Places: potent blackberry and cherry aromas, with a strong mineral overtone. Chewy and focused, offering very good depth to its bitter cherry and cassis flavors. Turns fleshier on the finish, showing velvety tannins and a touch of violet. #4, from Cote Blonde, also a new holding for the estate: The most vibrant and graceful of these barrels, offering intense red berry and floral qualities and a silky, seamless texture. Extremely mineral on the long, tightly focused finish. The tentative blend that will make it into bottle looks to be distinctly graceful, with energetic raspberry and floral pastille aromas and flavors giving way to deeper cherry and blackberry with air. Concentrated but also lithe on the bright, mineral-dominated finish.

Moving to the Cote Roties, Ogier owns a number of parcels (15 to be exact) spread throughout the appellation. Coming from a blend of terroirs, the 2012 Cote Rotie Classique possesses a knockout bouquet of white pepper, blackberry, leather, and hints of game. This flows to a medium to full-bodied, elegant and finesse-driven effort that has vibrant acidity, excellent mid-palate depth and fine tannin. It should round into form with a handful of years in the cellar and evolve gracefully for 10-15 years. One of the next generation of winemakers to come up through the ranks by working with his father, the young, yet talented, Stephane Ogier (who is one of the youngest vignerons in the appellation) has been fully in control at this brilliant estate since around 2003. Covering roughly 7 acres in Cote Rotie, there are new plantings just now coming on line, both in Cote Rotie and in the surrounding regions as well. In addition, they are in the process of building a completely new cellar located on the western edge of Ampuis. There’s lots going on here, and if you’re a young wine lover today, count yourself lucky that there are young vignerons of this caliber out there. Looking at the 2011s, these show slightly more linear profiles than the 2012s, yet both vintages possess fantastic purity of fruit and overall elegant profiles.
