Punteggio 92/100 · Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Mar 2013

Medium red, with a bit of development. Musky aromas of redcurrant, mocha, truffle, sweet oak and pepper. Chewy, suave and concentrated, but without the detail of the 1996 example. I picked up a slightly roasted quality. Finishes with substantial dusty, building tannins and very good length. Serious but not as expressive as the 1996. Showed some evolved notes as it opened in the glass: I'd enjoy this wine over the next several years.

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti’s 1995 Grands-Echézeaux followed. It was delicate, soft-textured yet intensely spiced, as well as more generous in its expression than the somewhat compact, dried out 1995 Méo-Camuzet Vosne-Romanée Aux Brulées that was served alongside it.

Good deep red. Less expressive, higher-pitched aromas of cassis, violet and spice. Expansive and generous in the mouth, with sappy, spicy fruit and a layered texture, but even more explosive on the very long, ripely tannic finish. This is currently better on the back half, while the Clos Vougeot is more impressive on the front end.
