Mid bricky red. Open and fragrant with orange peel and toffeed apricot, but also subtle, lifted and lightly floral – yet with a suggestion of stone-dust minerality. Those flavours on the palate, too, with a touch of bitter-orange spice and lots of freshness, still some red fruits even if very evolved. Still shows remarkable density and length. (JH)

Pale tawny, still with some distinct redness. Very delicate aromatics with the spirit aromas at the forefront, though it is not fiery or ‘spirity’. Stony notes and some earthy, woodiness and a Christmas-cake note that builds in the glass. On the palate, the fruit is starting to fade, with its dried strawberry and cherry flavours just about holding on to the peppery, brandy notes. Fair length of chocolate at the finish though – certainly not dead yet! (TJ)
This house makes rather restrained yet rich, flavorful vintage port and a very good tawny called Nimrod. Their vintage ports seem slow to develop, and while they never quite have the voluptuous richness of a Dow, Graham, or Fonseca, they have a unique mineral-scented character that gives them their own complexity and style. The 1963 is very, very good and now fully mature.
