A vertical spine of tannin gives the 1999 its distinctive feel. The purity of the flavors is simply dazzling. Readers lucky enough to own the 1999 should be as patient as possible, as it is a truly epic wine.

The 1999 Bonnes Mares Grand Cru is also brilliant, wafting from the glass with complex aromas of cherries, dried blackcurrants, dark chocolate, cinnamon and rose petal. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, concentrated and stony, with a deep core of vibrant fruit and chalky, tensile structure. Like its sibling the 1999 Mazis-Chambertin, it stood out for its extraordinary energy and precision.
