The 1996 Cornas Domaine St.-Pierre exhibits a saturated purple color, and rich, blackberry and mineral notes supported by tangy acidity, and dusty, firm, aggressive tannin. The wine is rustic, mouthfilling, and chewy, with considerable volume and depth, but the acidity and tannin keep my score low. Anticipated maturity: 2002-2014. Very good deep ruby-red. Bright aromas of cassis, truffle, smoked meat and cocoa powder. Rich and strong in extract; firm acids frame and extend the fruit. Complicating gamey element. Finishes with dusty tannins. Structured to develop slowly in bottle. A very impressive Cornas for the vintage.
