The Foucault’s 2003 Saumur-Champigny Le Bourg leads with piquant walnut oil and nut liqueur, roasted red meats and beet root, and blackberry preserves. Imposingly – indeed, for the vintage, startlingly – plush, it finishes with bitter-sweet, dark chocolate-dipped cooked berries and a strong, firm streak of tannin. Clos Rougeard is one of the Loire Valley’s most famous producers. Based in Saumur-Champigny, it produces fine Cabernet Franc in tiny volumes – wines that are almost impossible to source.
