There’s a suave, Burgundy-like character to the 1996 Clape Cornas that I find highly appealing. Fresh and lively, thanks to a core of juicy acidity, it offers gently sweet raspberry and cherry flavors, with floral and baking spice accents and a touch of smokiness. Candied violet and black cardamom notes linger on a long, smooth finish that shows just a hint of polished tannins. In the context of Cornas, this is a distinctly elegant expression.

Tobacco, blackcurrant, black olive, fantastic forest undergrowth scent on the palate with some truffle and mushroom, plus loads of fresh, well-delineated red fruit leading through to the finish. There’s a certain mustiness to this, but it’s the intriguing scent of old libraries rather than dampness. (RH)
The deep ruby/purple-colored 1996 Cornas offers beautiful aromatics of jammy plums, blackberries, and cassis. The wine is excellent in the mouth, spicy, and medium to full-bodied, with exuberant, zesty acidity, and unobtrusive yet firm tannin. From a cooler year, this well-made wine is ideal for drinking now and over the next 12-15 years. Importer: Kermit Lynch Wine Merchant, Berkeley, CA; tel (510) 524-1524
