Punteggio 92/100 · Da bere 2015-2020, Jeb Dunnuck, Wine Advocate, Sep 2015

Coming from the right-hand side of the Les Greffieux and the lower portion of the Le Meal, the 2000 Hermitage le Greal is fully mature and shows lots of olive brine, bacon fat, peppery herbs and sweet, dark, currant-like fruits in a medium to full-bodied, elegant and seamless package. Ready to go, plan on drinking bottles over the coming 3-5 years.

(July bottling; 13.5% alcohol) Good full medium ruby. Roasted currant, licorice and roasted herbs on the nose, with hints of surmaturite. Began a bit rustic but a resiny character dissipated as the wine opened in the glass; still, this comes across as a bit less primary than the basic bottling. Fat, sweet and smooth, with roasted black fruit and pepper notes. Less powerful and sharply defined than the young 2001 but supple and rich, finishing with substantial but nicely ripe tannins and very good nutty persistence. Sorrel says this is a slightly more supple version of the '99. Aged in mostly five- to seven-year-old barrels; for the 2002 vintage, Sorrel is experimenting with some one-, two- and three-year-old barrels purchased from Guigal.
