Medium ruby. Explosive, quintessential Cornas aromas of blackberry, blueberry, violet face powder, black olive and woodsmoke. Dense, tightly wound and penetrating, with a deep core of black fruit. With aeration, this chewy, vibrant wine offered flavors of boysenberry, blackberry and Valrhona chocolate. Finishes with big, tongue-dusting tannins and superb persistence. This, too, will require patience. But will it equal the outstanding 2000?

The Cornas cuvees are the most concentrated, interesting offerings I tasted from Michel Tardieu’s 2001 northern Rhone portfolio. The 2001 Cornas Vieilles Vignes is aged primarily in new oak. It has soaked up all the toasty vanillin characteristics, revealing just a hint of new wood along with a wealth of blackberry liqueur, cassis, mineral, licorice, and espresso notes. Full-bodied and opulently-textured, with high tannin as well as extract, this is a 2001 to forget for 4-5 years. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2018. While the gifted Michel Tardieu has fashioned dense, powerful, backward 2001s, the quality is well behind that of such recent years as 1999, 1998, and 1997. (mostly from a 1902 planting) Full saturated ruby. Superripe but tight on the nose, with notes of roasted blackberry, licorice and espresso; hints at the complexity to come. Superconcentrated but sauvage, with superripe flavors of dark berries, minerals, herbs, pepper and resin. A somewhat unrefined wine that conveys a powerful impression of terroir. Boasts juicy acidity for Cornas from a ripe year. The highly aromatic finish stains the palate with licorice, resin and pepper.
