Da bere 2025-2035, FINE+RARE, May 2025

The 1988 Imperial Gran Reserva (13% ABV; 85% Tempranillo, 10% Graciano, 5% Mazuelo) has a brick hue with a pale rim. The nose opens with dried red berries, tobacco leaf, and forest floor, framed by clove, and a hint of old vanilla from its American oak ageing. Compared to our last encounter, the fruit has softened further into the background, giving way to more pronounced savory notes leather, asian spice, and a distinct old-book character. The palate is medium-bodied with juicy acidity, fully resolved tannins, and a long, gently earthy finish. Fully mature, yet stable and holding with quiet elegance, this should drink beautifully for another decade at least.

Another very mature Rioja (like La Rioja Alta 904 1995). Very dense and rich on the nose though very very mature! Some sweetness and perhaps just a little too mature for my taste. Very delicate by now. Would need careful choice of food to serve with it.
