The 1997 Sandeman Vintage Porto is much more backward and fruit-driven than the 1994: intense licorice-tinged black cherries and cassis fruit that feel remarkably backward and primal. The palate is sweet and raisin-like on the entry. It is well-balanced with impressive concentration, but you seek more complexity and nuance on the finish that seems over-eager to make an impression. Perhaps this will benefit from another 20 years in bottle. Perhaps it will always be a little monochromatic. I fear the latter and might just hedge my bets against the 1999. Drink 2017-2030.

Blackish crimson. Simple sugary sweetness. Sheer mass and slightly raw sweetness rather than real depth and complexity. The fruit doesn’t seem that fresh. Really rather faded and overworked. Rhubarb notes. (JR)
Deep, healthy crimson. Some suggestion of green leaves on the nose. A bit harsh and that green streak won’t go away. Lots of acidity. Hot finish. A bit out of balance. (JR)
