The earthy, stemmy 1999 Cote Rotie Cuvee du Plessy is full of spice and herbs, with little evidence of cassis. Drink it over the next 2-4 years. Gilles Barge, former president of the Cote Rotie syndicate, remains frozen in time, adhering to the most traditional aspects of winemaking. However, he appears to utilize more barriques for his Cote Brune bottling as opposed to the lighter Cuvee du Plessy. Medium ruby-red. Highly aromatic, pure aromas of raspberry, bacon fat and flowers. Juicy and intensely flavored, if a bit tightly wound today in the middle; the raspberry, spice and pepper flavors are sappy and ripe. The red fruit and pepper flavors carry through on the generous finish. Barge initially thought this high-sugar, low-acid wine would be out of whack, but has been pleasantly surprised by its balance and roundness. This will be very accessible early on.
