Punteggio 94/100 · Da bere 2017-2031, Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Apr 2017

Medium red. Aromas of raspberry, mocha, spices, tobacco and cigar box convey a strong impression of soil. Plush and velvety, boasting terrific retention of crushed strawberry and raspberry fruit and complicating notes of roasted herbs and soil. Lovely integration of oak here: Dominique Laurent told me he used "only 100% new oak" in 2001. Wonderfully ripe and full for 2001, finishing sweet and long, with noble tannins and complex earth tones. This is evolving very slowly. Laurent noted that this cuvée and his Mazis-Chambertin need the longest cellaring of all of his wines.

Deep, saturated red-ruby. Knockout nose combines red fruits, mint, minerals, spices, mocha, pepper and smoke. Concentrated, dense and sweet, with sappy flavors of blue fruits, minerals, spices and underbrush. At once powerful and elegant. Finishes tactile and very long, with big, broad, palate-dusting tannins. Surprisingly tastable today; I'd expect this wine to shut down in the near future. This wine retained its freshness for days in the recorked bottle: I bet you didn't think I had that kind of restraint.
