The 2012 Gigondas le Lieu Dit was brought up all in older demi-muids, and like always, comes from a single parcel of Grenache vines planted in the sandy soils next to the estate. Full-bodied, elegant, seamless and about as silky as they come, with a Pinot Noir-like texture and elegance, it offers lots of black raspberry, black cherry, flowers and forest floor aromas and flavors. The tannin quality first rate, it has no hard edges and a gorgeous finish. Drink it anytime over the coming decade.

Full ruby. Pungent aromas of fresh raspberry, candied lavender and peppery spices, with a hint of smokiness in the background. Silky and perfumed on the palate, offering juicy red fruit and floral pastille flavors and a hint of spicecake. Gentle tannins build slowly on the long, focused finish, which leaves red fruit and allspice notes behind.
Bright ruby. Spicy, mineral-accented cherry, raspberry and lavender aromas, with a dusting of white pepper. Clean and zesty, offering gently sweet red fruit and floral character and building spiciness. Finishes quite long, with vibrant raspberry and floral pastille flavors and smooth, harmonious tannins.
Unnecessarily heavy bottle. Smells juicy, a little leafy and much more red fruited than the straight Gigondas – cranberry rather than strawberry, ie not especially sweet smelling. Dry, not a great deal in the middle but still carefully balanced. Seems lighter than the straight Gigondas and there's some vanilla sweetness on the chalky finish. (JH)
