Note di degustazione
Coming in only a notch below the seductive 1985, the 1986 is a marvelous Rouge with substance and class. Tobacco, iodine, leather, scorched earth and mushroom elements are all pushed forward. Hitting the full-bodied palate with ample concentration, the 1986 is a powerful red that walks off the stage with a deliciously complex finish. This has now passed its drinking window.

The 1986 Rouge is cut from a pretty similar cloth as the 1989. If anything, it may be a bit fresher! Dark, deep and beautifully layered in the glass, the 1986 is sumptuous and powerful at the same time, with that extra dimension of patina it has acquired over time. Classic mature Gassac notes of tobacco, cedar, earthiness and menthol open with a bit of time in the glass, but it is the wine’s total sense of harmony that impresses most. What a wine!
75% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% other varieties according to the label! Rather reticent nose and different from the rest. Meaty compact nose with hints of liquorice. The first vintage that could conceivably have been claret on the basis of how it tasted, albeit a pretty ripe one. Quite bloody and chunky, with some furry tannins, but an interesting drink with sufficient fruit for the tannins. (JR)
