Punteggio 93/100 · Da bere 2024-2055, Stephan Reinhardt, Wine Advocate, Apr 2024

The 2009 Riesling Clos Saint-Urbain Rangen de Thann is pure and finely mineral on the deep, ripe and intensely fruity nose. On the palate, this is a full-bodied, dense, lush, savory, quite generous yet also powerful Riesling with a rich body and seriously firm structure. Beyond the dense and very prominent fruit, this is a finely spicy and elegant, dense and ambitious Rangen that still needs time. It is a very well made and complex Ragen that currently doesn't deserve my fascination at this stage but my respect. 13.4% alcohol with 7.5 grams per liter of residual sugar. Natural cork. Tasted as part of the large Rangen vertical in Wachenheim, Pfalz, in November 2023. Having flowered much later than any of their other vineyards in 2009, the September sunshine actually helped the Rangen to finish ripening the grapes by October. This was one of the fastest vintages to ferment through, basically dry but with the roundness of small yields.

Honey, ginger, spice, voluptuous and not quite so energetic as the 2010. Lots of floral character on the finish. The slightest frisson of sugar on the finish. (RH)

This is an appealing Riesling for the balance between its flavor profile—ripe, aromatic notes of apricot, cantaloupe, honeysuckle and mango sorbet— and its finely tuned acidity and subtle thread of smoky minerality. Light- to medium-bodied and fresh, with a pleasantly bitter hint of candied grapefruit peel on the finish. Drink now through 2024. 450 cases made. Winespectator.com

Finishing at a 13.4% alcohol and seven grams of residual sugar not noticeable as such, the Zind-Humbrecht 2009 Riesling Rangen Clos Saint Urbain smells intensely of bergamot and smoky black tea and peat, which – along with briny and ashen notes – accent juicy white peach and apple on a polished palate. This finishes with prodigiously lip-smacking length and subtle pungency, encouraging the belief that it will be worth following for a dozen or more years and that greater complexity will emerge. David Schildknecht, Wine Advocate May 2011
