2005 Erdener Pralat Auslese Goldkapsel

The 2005 Erdener Pralat Riesling Auslese Gold Capsule exudes scents of over-ripe musk melon, orange liqueur, herbal essences, and honey. In fact, this smells really like a more intense but not significantly altered version of the “regular” Pralat Auslese. On the palate though, the effects of additional botrytis are evident, with a very honeyed character, caramelized peach, and dark malt, mocha-coffee, and toasted nut undertones. This is overtly creamy but not lacking in refreshment, hugely sweet but not single-mindedly so. It finishes with terrific persistence and layering of flavors from high-toned herbals through ripe melon and peach to the aforementioned darker, lower, roasted tones.
