Punteggio 94/100 · Da bere 2026-2030, Jeb Dunnuck, Mar 2026

A rock-solid bottle that held up beautifully over the course of an evening, the 1982 Hermitage La Chapelle is still deep ruby-hued with very little bricking. It's developed that classic La Chapelle meaty smokiness as well as still offering ample ripe black fruits, truffly earth, pepper, and some gamey nuances. It's clearly fully mature yet still in its plateau of prime drinking (assuming good storage) and has a round, mouth-filling texture, plenty of sweet fruit, and outstanding length. If you're looking for a fully mature, brilliant La Chapelle, this would be a fine choice. Drink 2026-2030.

Glowing ruby. Rather a charming nose. Old but a real charmer in a faded rose-petal way. I’d happily drink this – but now! Round and – just – fresh enough. (A second bottle drunk on 5 July 2024 was even better, and firmer.) (JR)

Pale brick. Lots of very fine sediment. Lightly gamey nose with some 'old burgundy' impression of sweetness. I had been hoping there would still be a bit more life in this wine, chosen to serve with grouse. The fruit has certainly faded. Most 1982 bordeaux have a lot more life left in them. But actually, an hour later from the decanter, the wine had real life and refreshing structure and acidity. It definitely improved. (JR)

Jewelly light ruby. Little touch of decay on the nose, then very sweet. Rather simple.  I've had better bottles. This one doesn't really show  much complexity. But nice balance and a bit of  raspberry fruit.   (JR)
