Deeper and richer than then classic cuvee, the Grenache dominated 2005 Gigondas Cuvee Valbelle offers an incredible bouquet of blackcurrants, charcoal, licorice, toasted spice and charred meats. Incorporating 10% Syrah, it’s full-bodied, deep and concentrated on the palate, with a smoking mid-palate, gorgeous fruit and a great finish. This is every bit as good as the Hominis Fides, and should drink well for another decade.

Nice development, excitement and complexity on the nose. Big and 'bloody'-smelling but well contained too. This seems to be just entering its savoury, good drinking stage. There's lots of interest and life here. Masses of quite assertive tannins underneath. Well-managed tannins and alcohol – neither dominate. (JR)
Deep ruby. Powerful red and dark berry preserve aromas, with subtle garrigue and tapenade qualities adding a brooding quality. Quite sweet in the mouth, with deep raspberry and candied cherry flavors and a finish featuring broad, velvety tannins. This displays wonderful pliancy and clarity.
Inky violet. Strong licorice and espresso notes accent spiced cherry and cassis on the nose. Muscular flavors of dark fruits, espresso and tobacco are framed by solid tannins that dominate the wine's finish today. There's outstanding material here and I'm looking forward to seeing it after it has had some cellar time.
