Even more complete is the dense purple-hued 2007 Cornas Brise Cailloux. Sweet fig, blackberry, and scorched earth characteristics are enticing as well as intense. Full-bodied with layers of concentration, admirable purity, sweet tannin, and an enticing texture result in a Cornas to enjoy over the next 10-15 years. (Not yet released) Proprietor Matthieu Barret is another member of Cornas’ younger generation of producers who have embraced the use of smaller barrels as well as more sanitary vinification techniques. The results are wines imbued with good purity, sweeter tannins, appellation typicity, and more approachable styles that retain 15 or more years of aging potential. Already bottled. Young vines, bottom of the slope. Pretty flashy and modern on the nose. Quite a bit of oak impression even though apparently no new oak is used, and very polished. Polished winemaking though pretty atypical for Cornas – not a hint of rusticity! Pretty chewy finish. The idea is to make a Cornas for people who don't yet understand it. (JR)
