Punteggio 93/100 · Da bere 2023-2035, Angus Hughson, Vinous, Apr 2023

The 1990 Shiraz Hill of Grace comes from a highly regarded vintage. It is starting to show significant development with intense blackberry, mulberry and praline aromas topped by old leather and roasted spices. There is good intensity and fruit drive on the palate. Powerful, spicy mushrooms and baked earthy tones are underpinned by tannins that are just starting to soften and deliver a lengthy finish. Drinking nicely now and for the next decade, but without significant improvement.

Another Hill of Grace that comes with a stellar reputation: combination of ‘picture perfect’ growing season and large yields . This bottle completely lives up to its reputation: quite reserved and elusive at first, like catching the scent of a delicious roast dinner being enjoyed in the next room, then opens to a flood of bold, dark, vital flavours, all wrapped up in a harmonious whole. Absolutely belies its age. One of the greats. (MA)

Medium brick in color, the 1990 Hill of Grace has a very pretty core of cherry cordial, violets, dried roses, cinnamon stick, anise and a whiff of pepper. Medium-bodied, it has great generosity in the mouth balanced by a nice acid line and a medium level of velvety tannins through the long finish. This one still has loads of life and should easily drink through 2025+. Importer: Negociants USA, Napa, CA; tel. (707) 259-0993

Dark crimson. Sweet, concentrated, rather tough oak tannins. Rather exaggerated wine without the elegance of some of the late 1980s examples. (JR)
