The only SGN produced by Olivier Humbrecht in 1999, the Tokay-Pinot Gris Clos Jebsal Selection de Grains Nobles, sports an apricot compote-scented nose. This full-bodied behemoth is lush, broad, syrupy-textured, and elegant. One of Humbrecht's more civilized SGNs, it is hugely impressive yet does not have the depth readers may have come to expect from this estate's top dessert wines. Drink it over the next 20+ years. Bravo! Olivier Humbrecht describes 2000 as "a year of excellent ripeness where the key to success was sorting out the bad rot prior to harvesting." To accomplish this, Humbrecht sent out teams to go through every parcel, dropping whatever bunches had been infected with sour rot. Domaine Zind-Humbrecht's harvest lasted 6 weeks, with one-fourth being accomplished between September 19 and October 5th, and the remaining three-fourths picked by October 31st. Quintessential tokay SGN aromas of orange marmalade, quince and honey, with a hint of barley sugar. Explosively fruity in the mouth, with razor-sharp (11 g/l) acidity framing the orange, tangerine and quince flavors. Truly confectionery but shapely and vibrant. A wine of great depth and persistence. Will last for upwards of two decades.
