(made from a 50/50 blend of marsanne and roussanne): Light, bright yellow-gold. Exotically perfumed nose offers passion fruit, pear skin and tangerine, with complicating notes of jasmine and quinine. Seamless, silky and pure, with expansive pit and tropical fruit flavors and intense mineral and citrus lift on the back end. Suave, focused and intensely fruity, with excellent finishing clarity and length.

The single vineyard 2011 whites include the 2011 St.-Joseph Les Oliviers Blanc, an equal part blend of Roussanne and Marsanne. This fabulous wine boasts abundant aromas of honeysuckle, caramelized citrus, white peaches and pears. With more apricot than peach flavors in the mouth, this rich, super-ripe, full-bodied, glorious, dry, full throttle white should be enjoyed over the next 4-5 years. The quality of Ferraton’s wines has been increasing with nearly every new vintage thanks to the efforts of Michel Chapoutier and his number one assistant, P.H. Morel, who has the responsibilities for these wines. I have included a few Southern Rhones that were not reviewed in Issue #203. Some of the 2011 white wines are in bottle, but the more serious cuvees are still in barrel.
