A serious St. Joseph that shows the richness and purity of the vintage, the 2009 Domaine Bernard Gripa St. Joseph is loaded with black raspberry, black olive, toasty wood, and spice aromas and flavors. Medium to full-bodied and beautifully fruited on the palate, with a fantastic purity of fruit, racy acidity, and a chewy, structured finish that has excellent cut and detail, this elegant, yet concentrated Syrah should drink nicely for 7-10 years, possibly longer.

Gripa also excels with his larger holdings in St.-Joseph. The dark ruby/purple-tinged 2009 St.-Joseph offers aromas of unsmoked cigar tobacco, crushed rocks, black raspberries and sweet strawberry jam in its elegant, medium-bodied, attractive, supple personality. Enjoy it over the next 5-7 years. No known American importer.
80% Marsanne, 20% Roussanne. Complex notes of spice and honey over apple and almonds. Quite a shock after the crisp white burgundies – rich and rounded, almost fat, though perhaps not in another context. A little sour on the finish but that does help the freshness. (JH)
