The wonders of age! After tasting the 2018 version, you can see what happens with maturity. That caramel and baked fruit note is just profound. Alive, alert, utterly delicious. Cooked apples and spice. Captures the magic of Riesling. (RH)

Predicting drink dates is an occupational hazard, as proven by the fact that a highly respected wine guide in 2005 set 2018 as the limit for the 2003 Auslese. With 2003 being the hottest summer in the last four decades I don’t blame them, but there is still some life left in this precious little number. Apple tart with marzipan, almonds and cinnamon may sound a little fanciful, but does it for my taste buds, with a hint of raisins reflecting the heat of the vintage. Very elegant now, no rush, but no need to wait any longer. (MS)
Rubbery and mineral – loads of heady petrol aroma emerging. Extravagant and sweet with loads of defined fruit character, like candied pineapple and ginger. A tour de force. (RH)
No more expressive on the nose than the Spätlese and in fact rather less developed. Weight and pure greenish honey on the front palate. Racy and feather-light. Caresses the palate. Excellent balance though actually quite a dry finish. (JR)
