(sourced from a 1-hectare section of Cote Rozier, in the Cote Brune): Bright purple. Intense dark berry and Asian spice aromas, with an assertive potpourri quality and a hint of woodsmoke. Deeply pitched red and dark berry preserve flavors show superb energy and lift, picking up notes of star anise and cola on the back half. Packs a serious punch but comes off lithe and focused, with excellent finishing clarity and sweet persistence.

The opaque purple-colored 2010 Cote Rotie Rose Pourpre reveals floral, bacon fat and dark raspberry-like characteristics, terrific structure and enough fruit intensity and extract to match the wine’s tannin level. This ripe, heady, long, rich, multidimensional, promising Cote Rotie should hit its prime in 2-3 years, and drink well for 10-15. Two cuvees of St.-Joseph are produced, including Les Pierres (which comes from stony soils) and the Clos de Cuminaille (which is a true “Clos”). 100% Syrah. Dark purplish crimson. Wonderfully muscular intensity. Lots of ripe fruit but no excess sweetness. Very juicy. Should make exciting old bones. Very vibrant right to the end. Good balance. (JR)
