The 2006 Côte-Rôtie from Saint-Cosme is muted on the nose, pretty tertiary with a welcome tincture of black olive. The palate is well balanced, a little chewy and quite Burgundy-like in style, though there is more black pepper and fennel than you would find on a wine from that region. Maybe this lacked the sparkle of other Côte-Rôties poured on the same evening, nevertheless, it is a commendable performance and it should offer another 10 to 12 years of drinking pleasure.

The 2006 Cote Rotie (100% Syrah, 9,000 bottles produced) was aged in 60-70% new oak casks. Its gorgeous nose of tapenade, creme de cassis, and flowers is followed by a medium to full-bodied wine displaying sweet fruit, good acidity, beautiful density, and a subtle dosage of oak. Deep ruby. Raspberry, cherry, violet and minerals on the nose, plus an undercurrent of smoky minerals. The smokiness repeats on the palate, adding complexity to the sweet red and dark berry flavors. Cracked pepper and sweet floral pastille notes linger on the finish, which is admirably pure and persistent.
Opaque ruby. Ripe blackberry and plum aromas are complicated by cinnamon and cracked pepper, along with a strong mineral underpinning. Displays fresher red fruits on the palate, with gentle tannins adding grip and structure. Shows excellent finishing focus and length. According to Barruol, this contains "lots of Cote Brune fruit" and clocked in at just 12.5% alcohol, while the 2005 is 13.5%.
