Meaty and now mature, this is savoury and generous on both the nose and palate. Softer and more hedonistic on both the nose and palate than the 1999, it is seductive with notes of grouse, black peppercorn, wood smoke and dried rosemary. Supple dried fruits and dried flowers offer sweetness, with fine acidity persistent throughout. Excellent. (TP)

From a vintage that was cooler in the northern part of the Northern Rhone than in the south, the 1998 Cote Rotie offers searing notes of pepper, tobacco leaf, flowers, olives and sweet black raspberry fruit. Still focused and tight on the palate, with vibrant acidity in its medium to full-bodied, classically styled personality, it has solid concentration, beautiful purity and a great finish. Drink it anytime over the coming 10-15+ years.
Another magnum from the Troisgros cellar and a lovely wine by any measure. Much paler than the Jamet 1999: mid ruby. Very sweet, broad, fresh and bright. The (doubtless considerable) alcohol was not too obvious. Well done! Very rich and round. Nice now. Fresh finish. Quite earthy. (JR)
