Clearly in the "old wine" stage, the 1955 Château La Conseillante is nevertheless, perfumed, complex, and satisfying. Offering a mature yet still healthy plum hue with solid moderate bricking, it has ripe, spicy dark fruits, some leather and forest floor nuances, medium body, and a round, soft, completely resolved and balanced texture. It's not going to get any better and there's certainly no upside, but it's still a classy, enjoyable Pomerol that I was happy to drink.

This was the only wine that was not château bottled (probably Belgian bottled) and it was very much below the rest in terms of condition. Blackish rust. Very oxidised nose. This reminded me of some of those Russian wines I tasted earlier this year, but it clearly had great fruity concentration too. Shame. This wine was very much on the way down but it must have been wonderful once. (JR)
